  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
  • Chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine the butter, sugar, water, and salt in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly.
  2. Reduce the heat to medium-low and continue to cook without stirring until the mixture reaches 300°F, the hard crack stage.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Pour the toffee onto a buttered baking sheet and spread it evenly.
  5. Sprinkle chopped nuts and/or chocolate chips on top while still warm, if desired.
  6. Allow to cool completely before breaking into pieces.

Notes

Use a candy thermometer for accuracy and store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks.
