Indulge in this classic Italian dessert with layers of mascarpone and coffee-soaked ladyfingers.

Ingredients

  • 6 egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 1/4 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup mascarpone cheese
  • 1 cup strong brewed coffee, cooled
  • 1/2 cup coffee liqueur
  • 24 ladyfinger cookies
  • Cocoa powder, for dusting
  • Dark chocolate shavings (optional)

Instructions

  1. Whisk the egg yolks and sugar until pale and creamy.
  2. Heat the milk in a saucepan over medium heat.
  3. Pour the warmed milk into the egg mixture to temper it.
  4. Cook the mixture over low heat, stirring until thickened.
  5. Cool the mixture slightly before proceeding.
  6. Whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form, then fold in mascarpone.
  7. Combine the cooled milk mixture with the whipped cream mixture.
  8. Dip each ladyfinger quickly into the coffee and liqueur mixture.
  9. Layer the dipped ladyfingers in a dish and spread half of the mascarpone mixture over them.
  10. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
  11. Dust with cocoa powder before serving.

Notes

Use high-quality coffee and coffee liqueur for best flavor. Ensure mascarpone is at room temperature for easier mixing.
