Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a sheet pan to ensure your cake comes out perfectly.
  2. Combine dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Melt the unsalted butter, water, and cocoa powder in a saucepan over medium heat until it reaches a rolling boil.
  4. Pour the hot chocolate mix into the flour mixture and stir until combined.
  5. Add the buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared sheet pan and bake for 20-30 minutes, checking for doneness with a toothpick.
  7. Heat unsalted butter, cocoa powder, and milk for the frosting in a saucepan until melted and combined.
  8. Stir in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until smooth.
  9. When the cake is warm, pour the frosting over the top and let it cascade down. Optionally sprinkle with chopped pecans.
