A rich and moist chocolate cake topped with silky frosting, ideal for gatherings and celebrations.

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (for frosting)
  • 1/4 cup milk (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 3 3/4 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a sheet cake pan.
  2. Combine 2 cups of flour, 2 cups of sugar, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of salt in a large bowl.
  3. Melt together 1 cup of unsalted butter, 1 cup of water, and 1/2 cup of cocoa powder in a saucepan over medium heat until combined and just boiling.
  4. Pour the hot cocoa mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until smooth.
  5. Add 4 eggs, 1 cup of buttermilk, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to the batter and stir until creamy.
  6. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Prepare the frosting by melting together 1/2 cup of butter, 1/2 cup of cocoa powder, and 1/4 cup of milk, then mix in 3 3/4 cups of powdered sugar and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract until smooth.
  8. Spread the frosting over the warm cake, allowing it to melt slightly into the layers.
  9. Cool the cake before cutting into squares and serving.

Notes

This cake is best served warm or at room temperature and pairs well with vanilla ice cream.
