Delight in these classic sugar cookies that are soft in the center and crisp around the edges, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 3 tablespoons colored sugar (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Mix the flour, baking soda, and baking powder in a small bowl.
  3. Cream together the softened butter, white sugar, and egg in a large bowl until smooth.
  4. Combine the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
  5. Shape rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls and place them onto ungreased cookie sheets.
  6. Flatten each ball with the bottom of a glass and sprinkle with colored sugar.
  7. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until golden around the edges but soft in the center.
  8. Cool the cookies on wire racks before enjoying.

Notes

For an extra soft cookie, avoid overmixing once you add the dry ingredients. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
