Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1½ cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chocolate chips or chunks
  • Your choice of frosting for the beards
  • Round candies or chocolate-covered malt balls for noses
  • 12 hulled strawberries for hats

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9×13-inch baking pan with greasing and parchment paper.
  2. Combine the melted butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar in a large mixing bowl until glossy.
  3. Add in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each, followed by the vanilla extract.
  4. Sift the flour, cocoa powder, and salt into the wet mixture and gently mix until no dry streaks remain.
  5. Fold in the chocolate chips or chunks to complete the brownie batter.
  6. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan and bake for 28 to 32 minutes.
  7. Cool the brownies completely in the pan and then lift them out using the parchment.
  8. Slice the brownies into twelve 2×2-inch squares.
  9. Pipe the frosting to create beards on top of each brownie square.
  10. Place a candy or malt ball above each beard to represent the gnome’s nose.
  11. Position a hulled strawberry on top as the gnome hat, adjusting as necessary for stability.
  12. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container.

Notes

For a richer flavor, consider using dark chocolate chips. Add a sprinkle of sea salt on top for a sweet and salty contrast.
