Soft, warm pretzels with a chewy exterior and airy interior, perfect for a delicious snack.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • Coarse sea salt for sprinkling
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by combining warm water, yeast, and sugar. Allow it to sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix the dough by combining flour and salt, then adding the yeast mixture and kneading until soft.
  3. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  5. Boil 10 cups of water and baking soda in a pot.
  6. Shape the pretzels by dividing the dough and rolling it into pairs of ropes twisted into pretzel shapes.
  7. Boil each pretzel in the boiling water for about 30 seconds.
  8. Brush them with beaten egg mixed with water and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  9. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm.

Notes

Serve with homemade mustard or cheese dip. Store leftovers in an airtight container for 2 days or freeze for up to a month.
