  • 1 loaf of bread (brioche or challah works best)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup butter (melted)
  • Maple syrup (for serving)
  • Powdered sugar (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Cut the bread into cubes and place them evenly in the baking dish.
  3. Whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large bowl.
  4. Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes, ensuring they are evenly coated.
  5. Drizzle melted butter over the top of the assembled casserole.
  6. Cover with foil and bake for 30-35 minutes.
  7. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Serve warm with maple syrup and a dusting of powdered sugar.

Notes

For added flavor, consider soaking the bread cubes overnight. This casserole can be made vegan using flax eggs and plant-based milk.
