A rich and creamy baked French toast casserole layered with French bread and a delightful cream cheese filling, perfect for brunch gatherings.

  • 1 (12-14 ounce) loaf of French bread or challah
  • 8 ounces full-fat cream cheese, softened
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 and 1/4 cups whole milk
  • 2/3 cup packed light brown sugar
  • Ground cinnamon to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. Cut the loaf into 1-inch cubes and layer half in the baking pan.
  3. Beat the cream cheese with light brown sugar until smooth.
  4. Spoon the cream cheese mixture over the bread cubes and top with remaining bread cubes.
  5. Whisk together the eggs, milk, cinnamon, and brown sugar.
  6. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the layers and refrigerate for at least 3 hours or overnight.
  7. Mix together brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and butter for the topping.
  8. Bake uncovered for 45-55 minutes until golden brown and set in the center.

Notes

For a darker flavor, substitute light brown sugar with dark brown sugar. This casserole can also be made with whole wheat or gluten-free bread.
