Recreate the beloved Applebee’s Chicken Wonton Tacos at home with crispy wonton shells filled with juicy chicken and fresh slaw.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • Wonton wrappers (square ones)
  • Pre-packaged coleslaw mix (shredded green cabbage, red cabbage, and carrots)
  • 1/4 cup sweet chili sauce
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger (minced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • Neutral oil (for frying, such as vegetable oil, canola oil, or peanut oil)
  • Fresh chopped cilantro (for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds (toasted or plain, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the chicken by poaching or boiling until fully cooked, about 15-20 minutes. Shred into bite-sized pieces.
  2. Whip up the sauce by whisking sweet chili sauce, soy sauce, ginger, garlic, rice wine vinegar, and sesame oil. Toss with the shredded chicken.
  3. Assemble the slaw by shaking the pre-packaged mix or combining shredded cabbage and carrots with vinaigrette.
  4. Shape and fry or bake the wonton shells, frying for about 30-60 seconds per side in hot oil or baking at 375°F for 5-8 minutes until crisp.
  5. Assemble the tacos by filling each crispy wonton shell with the chicken mixture and slaw, then garnish with cilantro and sesame seeds.
  6. Serve immediately while the wontons are still crispy!

Notes

For a lighter version, consider baking the wontons instead of frying them. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
