Classic Mexican Horchata

A refreshing and creamy beverage made from rice, cinnamon, and vanilla, perfect for hot days and pairing with spicy dishes.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup white rice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups water
  • 1/2 cup sugar (adjust to taste)
  • Milk or milk alternative (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
  2. Blend the rinsed rice and 4 cups of water until the rice is broken down but not completely smooth.
  3. Add the ground cinnamon and vanilla extract, then blend for another minute.
  4. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a pitcher.
  5. Stir in sugar until dissolved, adjusting to taste.
  6. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
  7. Serve over ice and add milk or a milk alternative if desired.

Notes

Store leftover horchata in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Shake well before serving again.
