  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup fresh blood orange juice
  • Zest of 2 blood oranges
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for the glaze)
  • 2 tablespoons blood orange juice (for the glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a cake pan.
  2. Combine the dry ingredients in a large bowl: flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Whisk the wet ingredients in another bowl: buttermilk, softened butter, eggs, blood orange juice, zest, and vanilla until well combined.
  4. Mix the wet and dry ingredients together until just combined, leaving a few lumps.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  7. Whisk powdered sugar and blood orange juice together for the glaze until smooth.
  8. Drizzle the glaze over the cooled cake, letting it cascade down the sides.

Notes
