A simple, hearty chili recipe that is perfect for chilly days, packed with flavor and can be enjoyed by everyone.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped (about 2 cups / 300g)
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced (about 2 tablespoons / 30g)
  • 1 pound (450g) ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons (30g) chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon (5g) ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon (5g) dried oregano
  • 1 can (15 ounces / 425g) diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (15 ounces / 425g) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup (240ml) beef broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the pot, stirring occasionally. Cook for about 5 minutes until softened.
  3. Introduce the ground beef to the pot and cook for about 8-10 minutes until browned.
  4. Stir in the chili powder, ground cumin, and dried oregano. Cook for 1 minute.
  5. Pour in the diced tomatoes, kidney beans, and beef broth. Stir to combine.
  6. Bring the pot to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low and cover, letting it simmer for 30 minutes.
  7. Taste and season with salt and pepper. Serve hot.

Notes

Chili is great with cornbread or crusty bread. Garnish with sour cream, shredded cheese, and fresh cilantro for extra flavor.
