A warm and comforting broccoli cheese casserole that combines rich cheddar cheese and tender broccoli, topped with a crunchy breadcrumb layer.

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 ounces cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 2 (10 ounce) packages frozen broccoli florets, thawed and chopped
  • 1 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup melted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Sauté the chopped onion in a large saucepan with 1/2 cup melted butter until softened.
  3. Stir in the flour until smooth, then gradually whisk in the milk, cooking until thickened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Melt in the salt, black pepper, and shredded cheddar cheese until smooth.
  5. Fold in the chopped broccoli until evenly coated.
  6. Pour the mixture into a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
  7. Combine the bread crumbs with 1/4 cup melted butter and sprinkle over the mixture in the baking dish.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbly.

Notes

For added flavor, consider incorporating garlic or other vegetables like carrots or bell peppers.
