Delicious homemade beignets that are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, dusted with powdered sugar.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by dissolving it in warm water and letting it sit until bubbly.
  2. Combine the flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Incorporate the milk, activated yeast, egg, and shortening into the dry ingredients until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Let the dough rise in a greased bowl until it has doubled in size, about 1-2 hours.
  6. Roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness and cut into squares or rectangles.
  7. Heat oil in a deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Fry the dough squares until golden brown on both sides, about 2-4 minutes.
  9. Dust the warm beignets with powdered sugar before serving.
