Delicious, fluffy beignets dusted with powdered sugar, inspired by the vibrant streets of New Orleans.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • Oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by dissolving it in warm water and letting it sit until bubbly.
  2. Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl.
  3. Incorporate warm milk, activated yeast, egg, and shortening into the flour mixture.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes.
  5. Let it rise in a greased bowl until doubled in size, about 1-2 hours.
  6. Roll the dough to 1/4 inch thickness and cut into squares.
  7. Heat the oil to 350°F (175°C) for frying.
  8. Fry the dough squares until golden brown, about 2-4 minutes.
  9. Dust generously with powdered sugar before serving.
